After a lot of searching for some good information on a good approach to starting business I can't believe I found this book. Sure you've seen the stories on how some the fastest growing companies got started. But nothing I've read until THE USER METHOD connected the commonalities of these businesses ... a really good product that people want .... started NOT in a quest to make big money, change the world, or even fulfill a gap in the marketplace.Of course there are tons of ways to start a business that becomes successful. But the concept of starting a business by making something they wanted to use themselves that is not already readily available, then making a basic, workable version of it and showing it to people is how this massive companies started. This book takes you through this user method concept with stories about the founders and empowers you to look at creating something for yourself. The didn't have all the same skills, didn't take venture capital but just had a burning desire to create something for themselves as the user.
It's a read that will at least leave you thinking "wow, that's pretty simple but not easy". What problems do I want to solve for my or product I want to create for just me. A book for anyone that's ever though they had a good idea, or even if you don't.

When I first started reading this I was skeptical, as I am no entrepreneur. However, by the end, I was beyond excited and motivated. Like, tell all my friends about it and bring it up in every single evaluation and design class excited.
I wish every business student read this book. It would prevent this “spend your whole life figuring out what other people want and then start a business” ridiculousness I see right now. About once every semester, I get 20 requests from local business school students asking me to take a survey. Every survey asks the same things- what do I think of this product? Would I like this feature? The answer was always “yes.” Oh, a stand for my bed where I can charge my phone AND hold my water bottle? Sure, I think that might be kind of cool. Would I like it to have a space for earplugs? Sure! Why not? But then it always gets to the place where it asks how much I would pay for the product. Umm, $2? Nothing? Honestly, I don’t have much interest in this product, but I don’t want to ruin the kid’s project, so I’ll put $5. But honestly, I haven’t got a clue what I would actually use. This book is the key to that problem.
I imagine that reading this book will probably be hard for some business students who haven’t actually tried to produce anything (what do you mean no market analysis?), but for the ones who have already tried and realized that focus groups, surveys, etc. actually don’t work all that well, it will be like a breath of fresh air.
See, this book was made to provide data to show how successful businesses have actually started. It’s not someone’s random theory on how they think businesses can be made, but how they really happened.
Real things. Data.
And it’s not like your typical theory book, where a theory is presented and then gives 100 examples of companies/designs/studies who did parts of the theory, but not the whole thing. All of the examples in this book follow the want-make-offer formula perfectly. Especially the want part.
As this is a book about entrepreneurs, I was hesitant to read it initially, not believing that I would be able to relate to its message. However, I found that the stories were motivating and completely applicable to my life (besides my obvious lack of marketable skills). Most of the people in this book weren’t trying to start a business, but were wildly successful at starting a business with things they actually wanted. This book made me believe, while I’ll never be a Mark Zuckerberg or a Nick Woodman, I could totally be a Susan Peterson or start a company like Sodalicious.
I highly highly recommend this book. Definitely for people in or considering business school, but also for the regular people with ideas.

I loved this book. It got better and better. I was excited to see what insights I could draw next. The stories drew me in and I felt like I was really learning form the experiences of famous founders at companies like GoPro, DropBox, Spanx, Uber, and surprisingly Ford even. I was totally engrossed. It was an experience.
So grateful this book used so many cool examples and didn't just dive into meaningless discussion about stupid meta ideas like Innovation Accounting (I hate The Lean Start Up, such a dumb book).
Founders used to seem like untouchable magical visionaries who saw the future. But it makes more sense that they searched for something they wanted, like a camera to take surfing. Then finally decided to make one for themselves after they couldn't find it anywhere. From the get-go these founders were experts on their products. They knew from personal experience what these products needed to be.
And it is so much simpler. You don't have to go out and interview people to find their "pain points" (barf). Steve Jobs said it himself. People don't know what they want when you ask them.
You make a product you really want because you can't find it anywhere. You make it good because why would you want to use something crappy. And then at the least you made your life better. And chances are so high that other people will see what you made and want it too!
The rock climbing company guy making himself better equipment! Sooooo cool. Steve Wozniak wanting a personal computer his whole life. Ferry Porsche wanting a light weight car that handled well. This book is all I want to talk about!
oh! and P.S. I loved the personal stories. You have some guts meeting dudes in parking lots to make planners and you were so real when describing your struggles as an entrepreneur. You've got moxie. I hope your ideas make it somewhere. We have too many kids coming out of business school starry eyed trying to be the next big thing without any substance.
Maybe they all need to just get jobs until they really find a big idea.
