Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 16

Two Stories of a Tumultuous Time

The Department of the Interior's bloody plot against planet Liad has failed, at least for now, but Clan Korval's firing upon Solcintra, Liad's capital city, to save it from the release of ancient killer machines has resulted in the clan's banishment. Korval has accepted this ruling with glee, but not everything is solved yet, especially with the clan's urgent Plan B still in effect.

"Hidden Resources" deals with untested pilot Quin yos'Phelium, a halfling suddenly in charge of the escape ship for the clan's youngest members as the eldest face several mysterious vessels, most likely bent on revenge. His father missing in the larger fray, Quin's job is clear, but resolve alone may not be enough to pull him through.

In "Moon on the Hills" the focus is on backworld Surebleak, Korval's refuge after their exclusion from Liad. Surebleak is a half-tamed place still ruled by territorial bosses, and Boss Conrad, while trying to tame it, must deal with finding a landing zone for Korval's clan house, and the tree that is the center of the clan. Yulie Shaper is the unknown factor the road runs through his land and he's not all that fond of changes.

The authors' craftmanship is top-notch, recalling the work of Elizabeth Moon and Lois McMaster Bujold." -- Publishers Weekly

"These authors consistently deliver stories with a rich, textured setting, intricate plotting, and vivid, interesting characters from fully-realized cultures, both human and alien." -- Elizabeth Moon

". . .good, solid space opera. . . .a very fine piece of entertainment." -- Don D'Ammassa, Science Fiction Chronicle

Halfling Moon Adventures in the Liaden Universe ® Book 16 eBook Sharon Lee Steve Miller

Two short stories from the Laiden Universe - "Hidden Resources" and "Moon on the Hills".

Both stories fit closely into recent happenings in the novel portion of the Laiden Universe. Without knowledge of at least the cultural structure of Laiden and Surebleak, the stories would be hard to understand so these are not stand-alones.

Hidden Resources ending feels too cut and dry. Likely what happens offscreen is in another story of the Laiden Universe, I just haven't read it yet. But that makes this story a poor story after a great buildup. For the build-up 3 stars on the Amazon scale. The story is about how to get family members transported under Plan B.

Moon on the Hills focuses takes focus off the central family for a moment. Instead we learn about the man who owns a hole on the planet. Not one of the perfect "chosen one" types of Korval, but a man whose worth to others is a hole. Korval needs that hole for the Tree. I love stories about the Tree. I would like to see another story where Yulie meets the Tree that becomes his neighbor.

Halfling Moon Adventures in the Liaden Universe ® Book 16 eBook Sharon Lee Steve Miller Reviews

When Carpe Diem ended, I wanted the next book to come out immediately. However, Fledgling took us to Theo Waitley's past and I wanted to know what was happening with the gang on Surebleak.
So I guess my frustration is that I really want a complete book about what happens on Surebleak, I want to see it grow in detail and to have a proper book centered around it and so while I love these snippets, I want more.

I always find Pat Rin interesting, and enjoyed seeing him here. These novellas are for committed fans, not a place for new readers to start.

1488 locations.
Halfling Moon consists of two Liaden short stories and was the 16th chapbook published by the authors. Both short stories feature members of Clan Korval dealing with important events in the immediate aftermath of I Dare. Although there are a few Liaden short stories I would rate higher than either one of these individually, taken together this is one of the best Liaden chapbooks and should be a definite buy for fans of the Liaden Universe.

"Hidden Resources" is a short story of about 8800 words. It takes place during and after I Dare, and deals with what happened to Luken, Kareen, and Clan Korval's children while they were in hiding as part of Plan B. The story introduces Pat Rin's son Quin (a teenager, and the group's primary pilot) as a full-fledged character for the first time. I enjoyed both the story and the introduction of Quin, although I would have preferred it if "Hidden Resources" was two or three times as long.

"Moon on the Hills" is a slightly longer short story of about 11,500 words. It takes place on Surebleak after I Dare and deals with Pat Rin making arrangements to relocate the Tree and the house, currently in transit from Liad. The story shifts perspective between Pat Rin and a very reclusive young farmer living at the end of the Port Road, right next to the land Pat Rin wants to take over. It's good. The young reclusive farmer is interesting, with a well-developed backstory; and the description of the arrival and landing of the clutch ship carrying the tree is great.

For the non- users out there, Halfling Moon is DRM free -- that is, there's nothing stopping you from reading it on any device you like or printing it out so you can read it on paper.

Finally, I should say that the very thing that makes these stories appealing to fans of the Liaden Universe -- they fill in details about important events in the series -- makes them an inappropriate starting point for the new reader. Those unfamiliar with the Liaden Universe would be better served starting with the three original Liaden novels, currently available in two compilations The Agent Gambit (Liaden) and The Dragon Variation (Liaden Universe Novel).
The first story is about Runig's Rock where Clan Korval's precious cargo is hiding during Plan B. The second take's up the story of moving Jelaz Kazone (the Tree) to new home, Surebleak. These stories fill in missing pieces at the completion of Plan B (big nasty, run like hell). The pace could have been better but the stories are interestingly - enjoy.
This contains two stories. Both excellent and enjoyable. The genius of Miller and Lee is their ability to delve into the lives of many of the people in their Liaden Universe, not just the main characters. In fact, in many ways there are not "main" characters, because so many are treated as individuals worthy of having their views, lives, experiences, thoughts and struggles told.

Hidden Resources is a story that fleshes out where the children were before moving on to the clan's new home -- Surebleak -- and giving more insight into those involved in protecting them and getting them to safety. The writers develop layers to characters, just as real humans have. The rigid and not-terribly-likable Kareen shows her worth with her devotion to duty and her respect for the abilities of others. Young Quinn demonstrates the potential for the man he will become. The story moves quickly, more action and suspense than many of the Liaden books, and is excellent quality.

Moon on the Hills deals primarily with a character whose major role with the "main" characters is allowing them to put their new home next to his. Minor character that might easily have just been mentioned, yet they give him life, a voice, compelling insight into his simple thinking and motivations. As usual, the writers make the reader care about him and rejoice in his being able to obtain safety and a connection to others.
